A Working State: The Art of Tomás and Charlie Lasansky
A Working State: The Art of Tomás and Charlie Lasansky showcases the art of Tomás and Charlie Lasansky in chronology for nearly four decades of prints, drawings, and paintings.
Tomás Lasansky, son of printmaker Mauricio Lasansky, and his wife Charlie have been lifelong artists living and working together in Iowa City. Both specialize in figural art and have created extensive bodies of work depicting family members as well as famous writers, leaders, humanitarians, and artists of this and previous generations. Working in close proximity to each other, they no doubt influence each other in subtle yet significant ways. This exhibition, the first ever two-person exhibition of their work, explores the relationships that exist between their work. The exhibition is accompanied by a significant retrospective book, documenting each artist's growth and development. With an introduction by Cedar Rapids Museum of Art Executive Director Sean M. Ulmer, and an insightful interview with artist and studio assistant Adam Rake, this book brings together 40 years of life and art.

Icons and Muses
Icons and Muses showcases the art of Tomás Lasansky in chronology for nearly four decades of prints, drawings, and paintings.
A collector of fine art books himself, Lasansky draws inspiration from his extensive library, and the result is a collector’s edition that is a work of art itself. Encased within a high-end, natural fiber, black cloth clamshell box, the Collector’s Edition, of 300 books, is hand-signed and numbered by the artist, and includes four original intaglio prints created for this volume. Lasansky selected the GardaPat Klassika, 200 gsm paper for its extraordinary weight, matte coated finish, and its ability to authentically reproduce his color. In addition to the 285 beautifully realized color plates, the book also includes first-hand accounts of the artist’s life and his creative evolution; an academic essay placing his work into a historical context; a selected chronology/collections/ exhibition history, and a catalogue raisonné of published prints
The limited edition book includes the same paper, printing and binding as the Collector’s Book. It is also bound with the same JHT Red woven cloth with rough weave, and debossed with a 4/c printed inlay applied to the front cover. The limited edition is contained inside a slipcase covered with JHT black cotton cloth.
The trade book includes the same paper, printing and binding as the Collector’s Book, but does not include a box or slipcase, and is bound with black linen cloth and a dust jacket printed 4/color, with gloss lamination.

The book, based on the exhibition at the Snite museum, showcases the art of both Tomás Lasansky and his father, Mauricio Lasansky.
An exhibit of the work of both the elder Lasansky and his youngest son, Tomás, the show brings the direct connections between the two artists’ work to the foreground, but it also emphasizes the differences. In a more subtle way, the show points out how time, generational differences and stylistic choices can, despite the weight of influence, make clearly similar works so distinct in their impact.
The equitable balancing of tradition and influence with innovation is what moves art forward as it passes from generation to generation, and this exhibition gives us a rare chance to see that process so undeniably at work.
